~의 소유다 (belong to sb) [높은 고품격 영어 구사력 (a high command of quality English)은 영어 원어민 또는 영어권 거주/유학 경험 등 단순 외적 지위 (sheer status)와는 별로 상관없고, 그런 능력을 습득하려고 평생 쉬지 않고 열심히 노력하는 겸허한 (humble) 사람이 소유한다]

In the mid-1970s, I fell so ill with tuberculosis in my last high school year in South Korea and was so unable to work on many subjects for university entrance exams that I devoted whatever energy I had to one single activity—reading novels and philosophers’ books in English.

That devotion proves to have been the beginning of my life devoted to English. Since then, as instantiated by over 40 years of building a corpus of useful English expressions from New York Times (NYT) and great novels, under any circumstances, a relentless endeavor to acquire the skills needed to express myself in quality English at will has been the hallmark of my life, which has been dotted with, chronologically, working toward BA in English at Soongsil University in Korea; doing a compulsory military service at South Korea’s northernmost front; teaching English at the two Korean high schools of Maisan and Salesio; working toward graduate degrees in English Education at the two Canadian universities of British Columbia (MA) and Toronto (Ph.D.); teaching ‘NYT Editorials-Composition and Discussion in English’ at the National University of Chonnam in Korea; working toward B.Ed. in English at the University of Toronto; and currently working as a teacher with the publicly-funded Canadian school board of YCDSB. In an effort to help learners of English effectively acquire such skills, I share with the readers of my blog, ‘NYT English,’ my everyday life-based, short essays as authentic examples of how useful English expressions of high caliber are used in the real world. While doing so, I would like to help the readers to act on the implications of the following fact. As the saying goes, “a genius is made, not born,” which finds support in Thomas Edison, who said “Genius is one percent inspiration and ninety-nine percent perspiration”; and in Albert Einstein, who said “It’s not that I’m so smart, it’s just that I stay with problems longer.” That is certainly the case with the way a high command of quality English is acquired. In a testament to the eventual triumph of substance over appearance, a high command of reading and writing in quality English has little to do with the sheer status of being a native English speaker or a once or now resident or student in an English-speaking country; and, instead, does belong to anyone so humble as to do the lifelong practice of working hard toward acquiring it. © Chinhyon Kim

< belong to + N > New Yorkers, of course, would have preferred a different outcome in Phoenix. But even the Yankees’ defeat could not diminish the excitement and sense of good feeling that flowed from a series that featured three of the most thrilling late-inning comebacks in World Series history. The first two belonged to the Yankees. On consecutive nights in Games 4 and 5, New York produced game-tying home runs in the bottom of the ninth and went on to win, something that had not happened in any World Series since 1929. The third and ultimately decisive comeback belonged to the Diamondbacks, who mustered their own bottom-of-ninth, back-against-the- wall rally against Mariano Rivera, one of the best relief pitchers in baseball. – Solace in sports [editorial].
